Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) is pleased to announce the appointments of Dr. Heather Cash as Director of Special Education, Early Learning and Elementary, and Robert Nichols as Director of Special Education, Secondary. Both educators have exceptional experience in creating and cultivating inclusive learning environments.

Heather Cash

Dr. Heather Cash

Dr. Heather Cash has more than 20 years of experience in education, including roles as a site administrator and director. Most recently, she supported NMUSD elementary school sites as a coordinator of special education, with a focus on early education. She fostered partnerships between general and special education to improve learning outcomes for students. With student-centered decision making top of mind, she has facilitated comprehensive practices and advocated for the district’s most vulnerable students. Dr. Cash’s experience with co-teaching training and implementation, from preschool to secondary levels, provides her with a valuable perspective to lead the early childhood and elementary programs.

“Heather’s strong interpersonal skills, abundance of energy, and deep commitment to the success of all students will be key assets in her new role,” said Dr. Sara Jocham, Assistant Superintendent, Special Services.

Heather earned her bachelor’s degree from Pepperdine University, her master’s in education administration from California Lutheran University, and her doctorate in education from the University of Southern California.

His extensive experience with student assessment, data analysis, differentiated instruction, and functional classroom design allows him to deliver engaging and effective instruction to meet the needs of a diverse population of students.

“We are excited to welcome Robert to Newport-Mesa. He is a knowledgeable, experienced leader known for working closely with administrators, teachers, support staff, and families to develop and implement effective programs,” Dr. Jocham said.

Nichols obtained his bachelor’s degree from Drexel University and master’s degrees in educational administration and special education from California State University, San Bernardino.

NMUSD fosters positive, inclusive learning experiences for all students. By focusing on building strong partnerships between families, educators, and staff, students receive support and experiences to thrive. The new directors of Special Education will begin their roles on July 1, 2025.
