Mrs. Debra Muniz ~ Sonora's 2010 Teacher of the Year!
Congratulations, Mrs. Debra Muniz ~ Sonora 2010 Teacher of the Year!
Debra Muniz is an amazing person and teacher! Her high energy and optimistic attitude are both contagious and invigorating! She has brought the Sonora Student Council to new heights, taught the 5th/6th grade GATE combo class with unlimited energy and exciting lessons and activities. She spent time over her Christmas break to design and build an archeological site next to her classroom for sixth graders, studying Ancient Civilizations, to actually do their own archeological dig! Student Council, under her direction has sponsored many student activities ~ Hollywood Family Dance Night coming up in February being the next exciting activity! She held a "dance off" earlier in the school year to raise money for a new sound system, organized and taken the lead on our 6th grade Science Camp experience, sponsored a "twister" event during lunch time and many flag deck activities. Debra is a positive force on campus and definitely exemplifies all that is excellent in education! Congratulation Mrs. Muniz ~ our teacher of the year! We love you and appreciate all that you do! :-)

MATTHEW FESILI ~ STARFISH AWARD RECIPIENT
On Monday night, a Sonora student was honored at the School Board Meeting for going "above and beyond." Matthew Fesili, a first grader in Mrs. McVeigh's classroom, has been helping a new student to their classroom since October. The new student didn't speak any English and even though Matthew doesn't speak the child's language, he has dedicated his free time to helping this student learn English, letters, sounds and beginning sight words. Matthew willingly gives up his free time, when he could be playing or choosing other free time activities, to help this student feel welcome and successful. Congratulations, Matthew! We are very proud of you and thank you for giving to others. You are a wonderful example for other Sonora Students!

Donna Honda - A Day Made Better
Tuesday, October 6, 2009 Sonora teacher gets $1,000 worth of school supplies OfficeMax's "A Day Made Better" doles out prizes throughout country to help teachers. By ELLYN PAK The Orange County Register COSTA MESA Sonora Elementary School teacher Donna Honda received a surprise visit to her kindergarten classroom Tuesday morning. Honda received $1,000 worth of supplies from OfficeMax, which awarded the prize to deserving teachers around the country through its "A Day Made Better" contest. The longtime teacher, who has taught at Sonora for 17 years, received a giant box filled with supplies including a digital camera, markers, a printer and more. "Oh my goodness! Good morning, what a surprise," Honda said after a group of people entered her classroom for the surprise visit. Principal Christine Anderson nominated Honda, who she described as a reliable, compassionate and dedicated teacher. Anderson said the donation of supplies was much needed during a time of budget cutbacks. Along with teachers who spend their own money for supplies, the PTA also gives each Sonora teacher $200 for supplies. The school has also sought help from local churches and organizations for donations, including books. "A thousand in our budget right now is a huge amount," Anderson said.
