Program Detail:
At Sonora Elementary School we have been very pleased to be able to have afterschool science clubs for grades 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 th. Unfortunatly becaiuse of budget constraints and funding we have had to discontinue the clubs this year. The clubs helped the students benefit greatly with the extra teachig and hnads on experiments. They were able to go on science related field trips and experience activities that many of our low socio economic students would never be able to experience. The club taught hands on skills and also encouraged group thinking, planning and implementation. The teachers woudl give problems to the kids to try to resolve using science skills- they students then came up with cause and effects for all of their solutions.

How this Grant will Help:
The science clubs challenged the students to work on real life problems and work together to solve them. The were exposed to so much more than the required curriculum and were exposed to biology, marine science, chemistry and physics at a younger age. Test scores in mathematics and in science rose from this extra exposure. The after school science clubs not only taught the students about science and challenged their intellect but they also gave them supervision and activities to attend after school and not have them at home un supervised while parents worked.

A Ceramist Residency for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grade Students

A master teaching artist, Eiko Amano will work with students in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades this year to transform clay into beautiiful works of art.

Eiko blends her experience as an artist with her background in analytical medical sciences to create art while also explaining the science behind the art.

Students develop motor skills, aesthetic awareness and creative vision as they form their own masterpieces in clay.

There will be a family night to display the works of our student artists and to celebrate their talents.
